Blogging for Beginners – A Two Part Series
Millions of people out there right now are harnessing the power of the Internet in order to drive their businesses. While many are paying hundreds of dollars for custom-designed websites, others are going the DIY route and are opening blogs. A blog can be a low-cost way to easily get your information out there, but it still needs to be done correctly. You may be saying “just show me how to blog and make money” but it is important to understand what blogging is and how it developed. By doing so, you will understand the potential POWER and LEVERAGE that you have with a blog. So be patient, this Blogging for Beginners path of understanding will lead you to some tips and ultimately to a step-by-step process for blogging.
Blogging for Beginners – What exactly is a blog?
There are many definitions but this is one that I like. ‘A weblog is kind of a continual tour, with a human guide who you get to know. There are many guides to choose from, each develops an audience, and there’s also comraderie and politics between the people who run weblogs, they point to each other, in all kinds of structures, graphs, loops, etc. Why do I like it?
Because it emphasizes that you are acting as a “human guide”. You are conducting a continual tour. A blog is a digital publishing platform and your job is to provide access to information on a particular subject and provide the readers with insight and training that will help to further their business and/or provide them with knowledge. Give the readers information that they can profit from now or in the future by returning to your blog and training when they need the information.

Blogging for Beginners – How Did We Get Here?
According to Wikipedia (acceptable source for our purposes), while the term “blog” was not coined until the late 1990s, the history of blogging starts with several digital precursors to it. Before “blogging” became popular, digital communities took many forms, including Usenet, commercial online services such as GEnie, BiX and the early CompuServe, e-mail listsand Bulletin Board Systems (BBS). In the 1990s, Internet forum software, such as WebEx, created running conversations with “threads”. Threads are topical connections between messages on a metaphorical “corkboard”. Some have likened blogging to the Mass-Observation project of the mid-20th century. Why is this important? These historical entities have provided a foundation that allows technology building blocks like RSS and permalinks to build on and create a truly dynamic communication tool.
Blogging for Beginners – Is Blogging Just Another Web Page?
What are some of the things that make a blog different from a webpage? RSS and Permalinks. RSS was born in 1997 out of the “Really Simple Syndication” technology, used to push out blog updates, and Netscape’s “Rich Site Summary”, which allowed users to create custom Netscape home pages with regularly updated data flows. RSS allows someone to link not just to a page, but to subscribe to it, with notification every time that page changes. RSS is beneficial to bloggers and publishers alike. It syndicates the content automatically providing a reach that the normal individual never had before. It provides the ability to reach thousands even millions of people instantaneously. This dynamic feature is a much stronger link than a bookmark or single link to a page.
But RSS is only part of what makes a blog different from an ordinary web page. The permalink coupled with RSS feed has provided many of the necessary ingredients for the dynamically changing blogging community. Originally all hyperlinks were permanent links because the content was static. The significance of the permalink is the fact that it allowed for an easy way to comment or create discussion. Content would dynamically be changed without the link changing. The outcome has been the development of social relationships or friendships. Discussions emerged and friendships developed. Digital bridges were built between blogs and now you can see when someone links to your pages. RSS and permalinks are two items that help the power of the blogger to “spread his message” and track the results. Why did I take the time to explain? Understanding the importance of these two items will allow you to become a better and more effective blogger. It will save you time and improve your results because you better understand their importance.
Blogging for Beginners – An Exchange of Ideas
Face-to-face meetings were the normal method of exchanging ideas before the Internet. Communication was face-to-face or over the land line phone. Blogging is a forum to exchange ideas and successful methods on a variety of topics. What an amazing educational tool. People can comment and reply to other comments. They can tweet and retweet your blog post. People can link it to Facebook or dozens of other social sites. It can be discussed on those social sites.
You are writing for others, not just yourself. A blog written to satisfy others will definitely satisfy you. Isn’t it funny how that works? Blogging appears to be writing about yourself, but the lessons that you learned are beneficial to others.
